Community Service

Community Service is providing both a sewing education for the community and offering sewing items to give to organizations who need assistance. There is always a need for more member involvement in coordinating and/or participating in community service projects. Columbia River Sewing covers a large metropolitan area, which means we can enhance the community in many ways. Please feel free to contact Community Service if you have community service ideas or would like to participate in a community service project. Volunteering your time means you get to choose how much time you can give to our group, and if life changes your availability, it’s all very flexible— there are no signed contracts or commitments! Projects can be taken on by individuals, or as a neighborhood group.

Some of the Columbia River Sewing community service projects include:
  • Sewing workshops at the public library—holiday gift sewing, making pillows
  • Park Rose High School weekly sewing group
  • Sewing with the Girl Scouts
  • Teaching how to make a ballet skirt in a local dance studio
  • Leading a reusable sewn grocery bag with a local food co-op
  • Helping with prom gown alterations with Operation Fairy Godmother
  • Making “dump bags” for the military
  • Helping with Christmas decorations for the Pittock Mansion
  • Making quilts for the Vernonia flood victims
  • Making dialysis neck pillows for a local dialysis center
  • Sewing anti-ouch pouches for breast cancer patients
  • Making scarves out of Oregon Ballet Theatre costume remnants
  • Mending clothing for a healthcare facility
  • Making play smocks for a local daycare center

While this list is by no means comprehensive, it does give an idea of the range of ways we can contribute sewing and spread the love of sewing in our community.
